Scientist in the Spotlight: Fabulous Fungi and Supercomputers

  • 14 Apr 2018
  • 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM (CST)
  • Bradbury Science Museum 1350 Central Ave, Los Alamos, NM 87544, USA

These activities are designed for those of all ages.

Come and interact with LANL's Scientist Ambassadors on cool topics!

Fabulous fungi

Join Renee Johansen, with the Lab’s Bioenergy and Biome Science group, while she shares information on the strange world of fungi. Behaving differently from animals or even plants, what you typically see of them above the ground or outside of their host only tells part of the story. Have fun as she offers up their many shapes and microscopic features, and shares the role they play in our planet’s carbon cycle.

Supercomputers

How do computers “know” what they are doing? Trick question! Computers don’t “know” in the sense that people “know”—but that might change in the future. Right now, computers blindly follow instructions. So, how do computers get instructions? Programming. Come and explore computer concepts from binary digits (0 and 1) to supercomputers. Teri Roberts guides you and your family members through this learning experience in about 15 minutes using hands-on exercises.
