Splitting atoms: How does an atomic bomb work? Where does its energy come from?

Mandie Gehring, with the Lab’s Neutron Science & Technology Group, will shed light on how fission works. Demos will help you better understand the physics of chain reactions using simple and accessible materials.

Juggling and math can both be fun

Everyone knows that a thrown object traces an arc, but only people who remember their middle-school algebra remember that a thrown object actually traces not an arc but a parabola. Jeff Favorite, a nuclear engineer at the Lab, demonstrates many different parabolas while juggling with his friend Lynn Wysocki Smith. Algebra and juggling are both fun!
